The Formation of Galaxies: A Challenge for Supercomputers - A Simple Task for GRAPE?
نویسنده
چکیده
We present numerical simulations of galaxy formation, one of the most challenging problems in computational astrophysics. The key point in such simulations is the eecient solution of the N{body problem. If the gas of a galaxy is treated by means of smoothed particle hydro-dynamics (Sph), the hydrodynamic equations can be reduced to a form similar to that of the N{body problem. A straightforward implementation requires a computational eeort / N 2 , making it prohibitively expensive to simulate systems larger than 10 5 particles even on the largest available supercomputers. After a description of the physical and numerical problems, we shortly review the standard numerical methods to tackle these problems and discuss their advantages and drawbacks. We also present a completely diierent approach to perform such simulations using a workstation in combination with the special purpose hardware Grape. After a discussion of the main features of Grape, we present a simple implementation of a SPH{N{body code on such a connguration. Comparing results and performance of these two approaches, we show, that with an investment of US $ 50000, the problem can be solved up to 5 times faster than on a Cray YMP.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملEvaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...
متن کاملAutomatic Generation of a Multi Agent System for Crisis Management by a Model Driven Approach
Considering the increasing occurrences of unexpected events and the need for pre-crisis planning in order to reduce risks and losses, modeling instant response environments is needed more than ever. Modeling may lead to more careful planning for crisis-response operations, such as team formation, task assignment, and doing the task by teams. A common challenge in this way is that the model shou...
متن کاملGADGET: A code for collisionless and gasdynamical cosmological simulations
We describe the newly written code GADGET which is suitable both for cosmological simulations of structure formation and for the simulation of interacting galaxies. GADGET evolves self-gravitating collisionless fluids with the traditional N-body approach, and a collisional gas by smoothed particle hydrodynamics. Along with the serial version of the code, we discuss a parallel version that has b...
متن کاملDASTWAR: a tool for completeness estimation in magnitude-size plane
Today, great observatories around the world, devote a substantial amount of observing time to sky surveys. The resulted images are inputs of source finder modules. These modules search for the target objects and provide us with source catalogues. We sought to quantify the ability of detection tools in recovering faint galaxies regularly encountered in deep surveys. Our approach was based on com...
